In 1831, Governor Darling formally invited public use of The Domain, and it became policy (very controlled before that). Lower Garden, located at the Farm cove’s head, was developed in the 1830s, and the shoreline was arranged ornamentally along serpentine paths. It was between the years 1837 and 1845 that construction on the Government House began in the northern part of The Domain. It was Governor Darling’s official policy beginning in 1831 to allow the public to use The Domain (very controlled before that). Ornamental serpentine paths were laid out along the shoreline in the 1830s when construction began on the Lower Garden area at the head of the Farm cove. The north end of The Domain is home to the Government House, which was constructed between 1837 and 1845. (north of the current extent of the Botanic Gardens). The Victoria Lodge gatehouse and gates were constructed to the east of the Gardens, close to Mrs. Macquarie’s Point, and the Domain gate lodge and gates were constructed at the intersection of Hospital Road and Prince Albert Road in the 1860s.
