St James the Great in February 1824 and became a parish church in 1835. During the time that Lachlan Macquarie was governor, the transported convict architect Francis Greenway created a church in Macquarie Street in the style of a Georgian town church. This church, St. James’, is part of the historical precinct of Macquarie Street, which also includes the early colonial era buildings like the World Heritage listed Hyde Park Barracks. The Greenway Wing of the Supreme Court of New South Wales is located directly across from St. James’ Church, which can be found at 173 King Street in Sydney’s legal and commercial district, close to Hyde Park and adjacent Queen’s Square. The church is located on Macquarie Street, which extends from Queen’s Square to Sydney Harbour and is lined with other notable colonial structures. The church and its surroundings were deemed “Sydney’s most distinguished structures on the highest ground, and, socially speaking, in the best part of the city” when it was built.
